Simple Program Hints

Keep your program simple and inexpensive; remember: many programs end up on the floor!

    The Elements of a Program
  1. The title page should include:
    A. The title and playwright
    B. The performing group
    C. The director/directors
    D. The time/place of the performance.
  2. The inside front cover should include:
    A. The cast "in order of appearance" (Remember: the program's purpose is to help the audience follow the show and not to reveal who has the biggest role; that will be obvious in due time.)
    B. A brief "Who's Who" (if you desire)
  3. The inside back cover should include:
    A. The acts (indicated by large Roman numerals) and scenes (indicated by small Roman numerals)
    B. A brief description of the setting
    C. The "Director's Note" that connects and introduces you to the audience and gives insight into the play. (See sample below.)
  4. The back cover should include:
    A. Thank-you's (Some suggested titles: "Bravos and Bravas," "Special Applause," "Encores and Roses," "Behind the Scenes," and "Unsung Heroes.") Try not to forget anyone.
    B. Last words of your choice.

Sample "Director's Note"
Director's Note: It has been my privilege to have worked with such a delightful, energetic group of youngsters. Our third graders have demonstrated their talents not only on the stage, but also behind the scenes as they worked on the scenery for "The Frog Princess." Enjoy the music, enjoy the play, but, most of all, enjoy your children. These are the moments we will look back on and smile. Theatrically yours, Mrs. Pulitzer.
